An Act for grant ing a Duty upon Gold. [12th
February, 1857.]
WH E R E A S it is expedient t o levy a D u t y upon Gold in South "Wales Be i t therefore enacted by t h e Queen ' s Most

N e w

Exce l len t Majesty by and wi th t h e advice of t h e Legis la t ive Council
and Legis la t ive Assembly of N e w South W a l e s in P a r l i a m e n t assem­

bled and by the au tho r i t y of t he same as follows :—

1. For t h e purposes of th i s A c t t he t e r m " G o l d " shall m e a n
and inc lude Gold in i ts n a t u r a l s ta te whe the r mixed wi th
any o the r substance or no t Gold D u s t and all o ther Gold
whe the r w r o u g h t or u n w r o u g h t except coined Gold issued

from the Roya l M i n t a t London or of t he B r a n c h thereof at Sydney or of any Fo re ign State art icles of p la te jewel lery

or o rnamen t ac tual ly worn upon the person or m a d e else­

where t h a n in t he Colony.

The verb " e x p o r t " shall m e a n and include transmission or

removal from New South Wales whe the r by sea or land.

2. F r o m and after t h e fifteenth day of F e b r u a r y now nex t t he re

shall he levied collected and paid to H e r Majesty H e r H e i r s a n d Suc­ cessors for t he publ ic uses of th is Colony and in suppor t of t h e Govern­

m e n t thereof t h e following Dut i e s upon Gold t h a t is to say—
A t t h e Customs previous to expor ta t ion from N e w South W a l e s
t h e s u m of Two Shil l ings and Sixpence upon every ounce
t roy weight of such Gold.
A t t he R o y a l M i n t a t Sydney on Gold impor ted there to on and

after t he fifteenth day of F e b r u a r y aforesaid t h e s u m of Two Shil l ings and Three-pence for every ounce t roy weigh t of s tandard fineness as declared after t h e said Gold shall have been assayed and b r o u g h t to t h e s t andard of twenty- two cara ts fine a t t h e said Min t .

3. Provided always t h a t at t he Customs no Gold en te red for
expor ta t ion shall he l iable to du ty which shal l be accompanied by a

Certificate from t h e D e p u t y Mas te r or one of t he Pr inc ipa l Officers of

t he Roya l M i n t at Sydney declar ing t h a t such Gold has been assayed
and b r o u g h t to s t andard and t h a t t h e D u t y the reon has been pa id and
t h e same has been issued from t h e said M i n t in conformity wi th t he
Ru le s a n d Regu la t i ons thereof.

4. Provided also t h a t such D u t y shall no t be payable a t t he
said R o y a l M i n t at Sydney upon Gold t he produce of any other of H e r

Majes ty ' s Aus t r a l a s i an Colonies which shall be duly impor ted to t he

said M i n t u n d e r t he Seal of t he Customs of such o ther Aus t ra las ian
Colony and u n d e r t he Certificate of one of t h e Pr inc ipa l Officers of
t h e Cus toms therea t signifying t h a t such Gold was expor ted therefrom
in conformity with t h e Laws and Regu la t ions thereof.
