2 Fruit and Vegetable (Grading and Packing) Amendment (No. 1) No. 270, 1993 ˙ Short title 1. This regulation may be cited as the Fruit and Vegetable (Grading and Packing) Amendment Regulation (No. 1) 1993 . ˙ Amended regulation 2. The Fruit and Vegetable Grading and Packing Regulation 1979 is amended as set out in this regulation. ˙ Replacement of s.15 (Mangoes) 3. Section 15— omit, insert— ˙ ‘Definitions ‘15.(1) In section 15A— “blemish” means a superficial disfigurement of the skin that is not likely to affect the keeping quality of the fruit and includes— (a) slight spray burns; or (b) a healed injury such as insect damage; or (c) superficial hail damage; or (d) abrasions, scratches and rubs; “defect” means an abnormal development of shape, colour or condition that detracts from the quality, general appearance or presentation of the fruit; “dry matter content” means the average amount of dry matter in a minimum of 3 mangoes determined in accordance with the process set out in subsection (2); “intact” means free from any mutilation or injury spoiling the whole of the fruit; “mature” , in relation to a mango, means that— (a) the fruit has reached such a state of development as to ensure a proper completion of the ripening process and has attained a dry
3 Fruit and Vegetable (Grading and Packing) Amendment (No. 1) No. 270, 1993 matter content of not less than 14%; and (b) the fruit is not wilted; ‘(2) In relation to a mango, the dry matter content is determined by— (a) removing the flesh from both cheeks of a peeled mango; and (b) blending the flesh to a fine homogenous pulp; and (c) analysing a sample of 5–10 g. ˙ ‘Quality standards for mangoes ‘15A.(1) Mangoes in a package must— (a) be clean, intact, mature, not overripe and sound; and (b) be free from foreign smell or taste; and (c) be of 1 variety; and (d) have a minimum diameter of— (i) in the case of Kensington Pride mangoes—65 mm; and (ii) in any other case—50 mm; and (e) in the case of Kensington Pride mangoes—have an minimum flesh colour value of 27 under the Hunter “b” scale. 1 ‘(2) Mangoes must be graded as ‘Extra’, ‘No. 1’ or ‘No. 2’. ‘(3) Mangoes may be graded as ‘Extra’ if— (a) they are well formed; and (b) they are characteristic of the variety in shape, appearance and development; and (c) they are free from— (i) damage caused by pests and disease; and (ii) defects (with the exception of very slight blemishes) that do 1 The reference to the Hunter “b” scale is a reference to the colour scale devised by Hunter Associates Laboratory, Virginia, USA. 4 Fruit and Vegetable (Grading and Packing) Amendment (No. 1) No. 270, 1993 not affect the quality or the general presentation of the fruit in the package; and (d) the variation between the diameters of any 2 mangoes in the package does not exceed 5 mm. ‘(4) Mangoes may be graded as ‘No. 1’ if— (a) they are well formed; and (b) they are characteristic of the variety in shape, appearance and development; and (c) they are practically free from damage caused by pests and disease; and (d) they have slight— (i) defects in shape; or (ii) sap burn; or (iii) blemishes; or (iv) sun scald; that does not affect the keeping quality or the general presentation of the fruit in the package; and (e) the variation between the diameters of any 2 mangoes in the package does not exceed 10 mm. ‘(5) Mangoes may be graded as ‘No. 2’ if— (a) they have moderate— (i) defects in shape; or (ii) sap burn; or (iii) blemishes; or (iv) sun scald; that does not seriously impair the general presentation of the fruit in the package; and (b) the variation between the diameters of any 2 mangoes in the package does not exceed 20 mm.
5 Fruit and Vegetable (Grading and Packing) Amendment (No. 1) No. 270, 1993 ˙ ‘Marking of packages containing mangoes for sale ‘15B. Any person who packs mangoes for on sale by wholesale must legibly and durably stamp, stencil or print on the package— (a) the word ‘mangoes’; and (b) the name of the variety or in the case of an unnamed variety—the word ‘common’. ’.
