PRAWN FISHERY – PROHIBITION ON TAKING OF PRAWNS BY PAPUA

NEW GUINEA BOATS

I

n accordance with the powers conferred by paragraph 35(1)(a)
of the Torres Strait Fisheries Act 1984 ('the Act') I, JOHN
CHARLES KERIN, Minister of State for Primary Industries and
Energy, for and on behalf of the Protected Zone Joint
Authority, hereby:





(1) pursuant to paragraph 16(1)(c) of the Act, prohibit


the taking of fish of the family Penaeidae (commonly


known as Prawns) in the area of the prawn fishery by


a boat in respect of which a Papua New Guinea


licence is in force;

(2) pursuant to paragraph 16(1)(o) of the Act, prohibit


a person from having in his or her possession or


charge on a boat in respect of which a Papua New


Guinea licence is in force, in the area of the prawn


fishery, equipment for taking prawns being otter


trawl nets and boards, unless that equipment is


carried by the boat in the manner specified in


Schedule 1; and

(3) pursuant to paragraph 16(1A)(d) of the Act, provide


that a boat in respect of which a Papua New Guinea


licence is in force that has been endorsed under


section 20 of the Act is exempted fom the


prohibitions contained in paragraphs (1) and (2)

SCHEDULE 1

Manner of carrying equipment referred to in paragraph (2)

Gear should be carried so that:

(i)           no part of the equipment is in the water;

(ii)          board are stowed in the racks or hanging from
   the blocks;


(iii)         the cod-end of each net is open.
