Firearms (General) Amendment
(Extension of Buyback and Amnesty
Periods) Regulation 2004
under the
Firearms Act 1996
His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor, with the advice of the Executive
Council, has made the following Regulation under the Firearms Act 1996.

Explanatory note
The objects of this Regulation are:
| (a) | to extend, until 30 June 2004, the operation of the compensation scheme under sections 78 and 78A of the Firearms Act 1996 for surrendering pistols and certain associated items, and |
| (b) | to extend, until 30 June 2004, the general amnesty for surrendering (without compensation) illegally held firearms to the police. |
This Regulation is made under the Firearms Act 1996, including section 78 (1) and 88
(the general regulation-making power).

1 Name of Regulation
This Regulation is the Firearms (General) Amendment (Extension of Buyback and Amnesty Periods) Regulation 2004.
2 Amendment of Firearms (General) Regulation 1997
The Firearms (General) Regulation 1997 is amended as set out in
Schedule 1.

(Clause 2)
[1] Clause 120 Temporary general amnesty for illegally held firearms that are surrendered to the police
Omit “6 months later” from the definition of general amnesty period in clause 120 (1).
Insert instead “on 30 June 2004”.
[2] Clause 122
Insert after clause 121:
122 Extension of “buyback period” For the purposes of the definition of buyback period in section 78 (1) of the Act, the period starting on 1 October 2003 and ending on 30 June 2004 is prescribed.
