Firearms Act 1996

Firearms Amendment Regulations 2022

The Governor in Council makes the following Regulations:

1Objective

The objective of these Regulations is to amend the Firearms Regulations 2018—

(a)to make consequential amendments arising from amendments to the Firearms Act 1996 made by the Firearms and Other Acts Amendment Act 2021; and

(b)to make other technical amendments.

2Authorising provision

These Regulations are made under section 191 of the Firearms Act 1996.

3Commencement

These Regulations come into operation on 30 August 2022.

4Principal Regulations

In these Regulations, the Firearms Regulations 2018[1] are called the Principal Regulations.

5Conduct of sport or target shooting activity on private property other than an approved shooting range

For regulation 8(1)(b) of the Principal Regulations substitute

"(b)a person taking part in the activity must not discharge a firearm in the course of the activity unless—

(i)the firearm is a shotgun discharged at a moving clay target; or

(ii)the firearm is discharged at a target which has in place, within 20 metres behind it, a backstop which is capable of stopping any projectile which passes through or beyond the target;".

6Regulation 27 revoked

Regulation 27 of the Principal Regulations is revoked.

7Schedule 8 revoked

Schedule 8 to the Principal Regulations is revoked.
