Name of regulation
This regulation is the Firearms Amendment Regulation 2024 (No 1).
Commencement
This regulation commences on the day after its notification day.
NoteThe naming and commencement provisions automatically commence on the notification day (see Legislation Act, s 75 (1)).

16ACategory C licences, genuine reasons—Act, s 64 (a)
The following genuine reasons are prescribed:
(a)vertebrate pest animal control;
(b)sport or target shooting, if any of the following also applies in relation to an applicant for a category C licence:
(i)the applicant is physically unable to compete in shooting competitions without the use of a semiautomatic or pump‑action shotgun;
(ii)the applicant was lawfully in possession of the firearm on or before 14 November 1996;
(c)employment (other than by a security business) or occupational requirements relating to rural purposes.
16BApplication of s 16A (b) and (c) to previously issued category C licences
(1)This section applies if—
(a)an adult had been granted a category C licence or a renewal of a category C licence before the commencement of the Firearms Amendment Regulation 2024 (No 1), section 8, but on or after 15 January 2009; and
(b)the licence or renewal of the licence is for the possession or use of a prohibited firearm for the genuine reason (however expressed) of—
(i)sport or target shooting, and—
(A)at the time the licensee applied for the licence or renewal, the licensee was physically unable to compete in shooting competitions without the use of a semiautomatic or pump-action shotgun; or
(B)the licensee was lawfully in possession of the firearm on or before 14 November 1996; or
(ii)employment (other than by a security business) or occupational requirements relating to rural purposes.
(2)Section 16A (b) or (c) applies in relation to the licence or renewal of the licence as if those genuine reasons had been prescribed under the Act, section 64 (a), on or after 15 January 2009.
