Reef Guardian Grants Program

To fund activities that protect and conserve the heritage and the environment of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area (the heritage area) and the Great Barrier Reef catchment area (the catchment area), including the following:

(a) activities to engage communities in the catchment area to enable stewardship of the heritage and catchment areas;

(b) research projects designed to address priority planning and management issues in the heritage and catchment areas that are undertaken by eligible students or researchers;

(c) activities carried out in the heritage and catchment areas to address one or more of the key threats to the Great Barrier Reef;

(d) activities carried out in the heritage area to support reef resilience.

This objective also has the effect it would have if it were limited to providing funding for activities giving effect to Australia’s obligations under the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, particularly Articles 4, 5(a), 5(c) and 5(d).

Antarctic Science Foundation

To support Antarctic scientific research by providing funding (including loans) to the Antarctic Science Foundation for purposes relating to the establishment and initial operations of the Foundation, including the following:

(a) employing key staff members;

(b) meeting the preliminary travel costs of those staff members;

(c) publicly launching the Foundation.

This objective also has the effect it would have if it were limited to providing support for activities:

(a) that are carried out in the Australian Antarctic Territory; or

(b) in relation to places, persons, matters or things external to Australia.
