FILM AND VIDEO TAPE CLASSIFICATION ACT 1984—

REGULATION

(Relating to the new “MA” classification of films)

HIS Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council, and in pursuance of the Film and Video Tape Classification Act 1984, has been pleased to make the Regulation set forth hereunder.

Commencement

1. This Regulation commences on 9th July, 1993.

Amendments

2. The Film and Video Tape Classification Regulation 1985 is

amended:

(a) by inserting after clause 4 (1) (c) the following paragraph:

(c1) in the case of a film classified as an “MA” film:

(i) the words “Restrictions apply to persons under 15 years”; and

(ii)  a symbol, consisting of the letters MA enclosed within, but not touched by, a hexagon; and

(b)

by inserting in clause 6 (1) after the line beginning with a symbol consisting of the letter “M” enclosed within a circle the following matter:

MA Restricted (restrictions apply to persons under 15 years)

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Film and Video Tape Classification (Amendment) Act 1993 introduced a new “MA” classification for films (including video tapes) that are unsuitable for viewing by a child under the age of 15 years.

The object of this Regulation is to prescribe markings relating to the new classification. The markings are required by section 27 (1) of the Film and Video Tape Classification Act 1984 to appear on the container, wrapping or casing in which an MA-classified film is displayed or sold. Under section 28 of that Act, a notice containing the markings must also be displayed on the premises on which the film is displayed or from which it is sold.

The Regulation is made under sections 27 and 28 of the Film and Video Tape

Classification Act 1984.
