AN ACT to amend the Dog Act, 1903-1967 for purposes relating to the control and manage- ment of greyhounds.

BE it enacted by the Queen's Most ExcellentMajesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

1. (1) This Act may be cited as the Dog Act

2. The principal Act is amended by adding after

section 18 the following section-

18A. (1) The owner of a greyhound shall, except while the greyhound is on land of which, or within premises of which, the owner of the greyhound is the occupier, cause a muzzle to be securely fixed upon the mouth of the grey- hound in such a manner as will prevent it from biting any person or animal.

(2) The owner of a greyhound shall, at all

times when the greyhound is in or on a public place, cause the greyhound to be under the effective control of a competent person.

(3) For the purposes of subsection (2) of this

section, a greyhound shall be deemed not to be

under the effective control of a person if

(a)

that greyhound is one of more than four greyhounds under the control of that person at the one time; or

(b)

that person is not controlling the greyhound by means of a prescribed type of chain, cord or leash.

(4) Subsections (1) and (2) of this section do not apply to a greyhound at any time when the greyhound is

(a)

being exhibited for show purposes; or

(b) participating in an obedience trial,

if at that time the greyhound is under the

control of a competent person.

(5) Notwithstanding the provisions of sections seventeen A and eighteen of this Act, a greyhound is not required to have its registra- tion disc attached to a collar round its neck while the greyhound is participating in a greyhound race or trial under the control of the Greyhound Racing Control Board estab- lished under the Greyhound Racing Control Act, 1972.
