3. Every person (male or female) shall be entitled to be

registered as a dentist under the principal Act who is above the age of twenty-one years and of good character, and who, having observed the rules, shall prove to the satisfaction of the Board

(a)

that he has for not less than four years continuously practised dentistry in the United Kingdom or in some part of His Majesty's Dominions or in the United States of America, and holds such certifi- cate, diploma, or degree as may be prescribed by the rules, and has passed such examinations (if any) as may, in like manner, be prescribed; or

(b)

that he holds the diploma in dentistry of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, of Ireland, Edin- burgh, or Glasgow, or holds a University degree of dental surgery or dental science of an Australian University, or holds the diploma of Licentiate of Dental Surgery of the Australian College of Den- tistry, and which diploma was granted after the date when such college was affiliated with the University of Melbourne;

(c)

that he has during a period of not less than four years been continuously engaged in Western Aus- tralia as an apprentice to a dentist under regis- tered articles of apprenticeship, and has passed such examinations as may be prescribed by the rules.

4. Every person (male and female) shall be entitled to be registered as a dentist under the principal Act who is above the age of twenty-one years and of good character, and who, having observed the rules, shall

(a)

prove to the satisfaction of the Board that he has been engaged in both operative and prosthetic dentistry in. Western Australia for periods total- ling six years : Provided that all time spent by the applicant on active service with the Australian Imperial Forces shall be counted as part of such six years; and

(b)

apply for registration within six calendar months after the passing of this Act: Provided that in the case of a soldier who has enlisted, and is still serv- ing with the Australian Imperial Forces at the passing of this Act, such application may be made within twelve calendar months after his discharge; and

(c)

within three years after he has applied for regis- tration as aforesaid pass an examination to the satisfaction of the Board on the subjects and syllabus, and in the manner set out in the Sche- dule:

(d) Provided that the following persons shall be

entitled to be registered by the Board as dentists,

that is to say--

Every person who for seven years prior to the 1st day of August, 1920, has been engaged in Western Aus- tralia or in the dental corps of the Australian Imperial Forces in the work of a dental surgery assistant by the per- formance of dental operations in the mouth, and who was on the 1st day of August, 1920, alone or with co- partners an employer of or in partnership with any dentist.

fied that the applicant is otherwise qualified.

6.    (1.) The Board may require the attendance of any Power to take

person who applies for registration, and of any person or per- evidence on

persons or any witnesses who may attend before the Board,

upon oath or affirmation, and for any such purpose the presi-

dent or any chairman of the Board may administer any oath

or affirmation.

(2.) Every summons issued by the Board requiring the attendance of any person, dentist, or witness, or the produc- tion of any documents, and signed by the registrar, shall

have the same effect as a subpoena ad testificandum or duces

tecunt, as the case may be, issued by the Supreme Court in

a civil action; and the obedience thereto, or non-observance thereof, may be enforced and punished by a Judge in cham- bers, in the same manner as the case of the disobedience or non-observance of a subpoena issued by the said Court,

The examination to be passed by applicants for registration under

PRACTICAL DENTISTRY.

Operative dentistry to comprise gold amalgam or other fillings;

the candidate may also be asked to perform or answer questions in regard

to any other Operations in ordinary practice.

(a)

Mechanical Dentistry.—Specimen pieces of the various classes of

mechanical work, including crown and bridge work, must be constructed

under the supervision of the examiner.

(b)

N.B.—The candidate will be required in the practical examination to use his own material and small instruments; the larger, such as lathe, vulcaniser, engine, and chair will be provided by the Board.

THEORETICAL EXAMINATIONS.

Papers containing a series of questions on the following subjects will be submitted, to be answered in writing:

Dental Materia Medica and Therapeutics.—Text Book, Glassing- ton (Second or latest edition).

(a)

Dental Surgery and Pathology and Orthodontia.—Text Book, Tomes and Nowell (Fifth or latest edition).

(b)

If a candidate failing to pass the examination, as a whole, should obtain a pass in one or both of the theoretical subjects, he shall on re- examination be exempt from a further examination in the theoretical sub- ject or subjects already passed in.

The examination shall be held once in every six months.
