I, THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL of the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, hereby make the following Regulations under the Customs Act 1901.

Principal Regulations

1. In these Regulations, “Principal Regulations” means the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations.

2. After regulation 4p of the Principal Regulations the following regulation is inserted:

Importation of goods from the Republic of South Africa

“4q. (1) In this regulation, ‘authorized person’ means a person appointed in writing by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs to be an authorized person for the purposes of this regulation.

“(2) The importation into Australia from the Republic of South Africa of goods specified in Schedule 7a is prohibited unless the permission in writing of the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs or an authorized person to import the goods from that country is produced to a Collector.”.

Schedule 7a

3. After the Seventh Schedule to the Principal Regulations the following Schedule is inserted:

SCHEDULE 7a

GOODS THE IMPORTATION OF WHICH FROM THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA IS PROHIBITED UNLESS THE PERMISSION OF THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS OR AN AUTHORIZED PERSON IS PRODUCED TO THE COLLECTOR

Batons, clubs, riot sticks and similar devices of a kind used for law enforcement purposes

Body armour, including—

(a) bullet-resistant apparel;

(b) bullet-resistant pads; and

(c) protective helmets

Coins, including krugerrands, that are, or have at any time been, currency in the Republic of South Africa

5

Grenades, mines, missiles and rockets, whether or not they are charged

6

Handcuffs, leg irons and other devices used for restraining prisoners

7

Parts, components and accessories for any of the goods referred to in item 1, 5 or 10

8

Riot protection shields

9

Vehicles designed or adapted for law enforcement or military purposes

10

Weapons, including rocket launchers and missile launchers

11

Whips
