I, NICK SHERRY, Minister for Superannuation and Corporate Law, make this Determination under subsection 13A (1) of the Currency Act 1965.

  1. Name of Determination

This Determination is the Currency (Royal Australian Mint) Determination 2008 (No. 10).

  1. Commencement

This Determination commences on the day after it is registered.

  1. Specification of coins

For subsection 13A (1) of the Currency Act 1965, each item in Schedule 1 specifies:

(a)    the denomination of a coin; and

(b)    the coin’s:

(i)    standard composition; and

(ii)    standard weight and the allowable variation from that weight; and

(iii)    dimensions; and

(iv)    design.

  1. Application

The specifications in Schedule 1 do not affect any other determination of the specifications of a coin.

A design consisting of:

     (a)   in the centre — a replica of the obverse side of the 1852 Adelaide Assay Office gold ingot, plated with not less than 99.99% gold, that shows:

            (i)   the authority stamp in the form of a triple‑struck shield surrounding the partly visible initials ‘S.A’ and a crown located above the initials; and

           (ii)   the fineness stamp composed of the word ‘CARAT’ and the punch marks ‘23’, ‘1’ and ‘8’, representing 23 and 1/8th carats; and

          (iii)   the weight stamp, being a circular border enclosing each of the following:

                    (A)     the words ‘WEIGHT OF INGOT’;

                    (B)     the abbreviations ‘OZ.DWT.GR’ located above the punch marks ‘0’, ‘5’ and ‘8’, indicating that the weight of the ingot is 5 pennyweights and 8 grains;

                    (C)     the expression ‘EQUIV. WEIGHT OF 22 CARATS’ located above the punch marks ‘5’ and ‘14’, indicating the weight of the ingot after it is converted to the standard of 22 carats; and

    (b)   the inscription ‘1852 ADELAIDE ASSAY OFFICE GOLD INGOT’; and

     (c)   a border composed of 3 intersecting lines, partly surrounding the replica of the ingot; and

    (d)   a die number.

Reverse design

A design consisting of:

     (a)   in the centre — a replica of the reverse side of the 1852 Adelaide Assay Office gold ingot, plated with not less than 99.99% gold, that shows the effects of the stamp used to create the obverse side of the ingot; and

    (b)   a border composed of 3 intersecting lines, partly surrounding the replica of the ingot; and

     (c)   an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, and the monogram ‘IRB’, enclosed in a circular border; and

    (d)   the inscriptions:

            (i)   ‘ELIZABETH II ‑ AUSTRALIA 2009’; and

           (ii)   ‘ONE DOLLAR’.

with dots before and after the inscription ‘5 DOLLARS’.

Reverse design

A design consisting of:

     (a)   3 different holographic images, one of which appears at a time depending on the angle at which the coin is viewed:

            (i)   a coloured background representing the Aurora Australis behind a silhouette of a ship, a group of penguins and a landing party; and

           (ii)   a coloured background representing the Aurora Australis behind a silhouette of 3 people standing behind a flagpole with a flag attached; and

          (iii)   a coloured background representing the Aurora Australis behind a silhouette of 2 birds flying over land and water; and

    (b)   the International Polar Year logo; and

     (c)   a map of Antarctica showing the coordinates ‘0°’, ‘90°E’ and ‘90°W’ ; and

    (d)   the inscriptions:

            (i)   ‘AUSTRALIAN ANTARCTIC TERRITORY’; and

           (ii)   ‘INTERNATIONAL POLAR YEAR 2007‑2008’; and

          (iii)   ‘AURORA AUSTRALIS’.
