Currency Regulations2 (Amendment)

I, THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL of the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, hereby make the following Regulations under the Currency Act 1965.

Designs of coins

1. Regulation 4 of the Currency Regulations is amended:

(a) by omitting from subparagraph (a) (i) “and” (last occurring);

(b) by omitting subparagraph (a) (ii) and substituting the following subparagraphs:

“(ii) in the case of a coin of the denomination of $1—circular:

(a) having a circular excision concentric with the circumference of the coin (in these Regulations called ‘a holey dollar coin’); or

(b) having no such excision; and

(iii) in any other case—circular;”;

(c) by inserting in paragraph (b) “external” after “in respect of the”;

(d) by inserting in subparagraph (b) (i) “, 25 cents” after “2 cents”;

(e) by inserting after paragraph (b) the following paragraph:

“(ba) in respect of the internal edge of a holey dollar coin— plain;”;

(f) by inserting before subparagraph (c) (i) the following subparagraphs:

“(iaa) in the case of a coin of the denomination of 25 cents— an effigy of the Queen and the inscriptions ‘ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA’ and ‘25 CENTS’, all encircled by raised beads inside the rim of the coin;

(iab) in the case of a holey dollar coin—an effigy of the Queen and the inscriptions ‘ELIZABETH II’, ‘AUSTRALIA’ and ‘ONE DOLLAR’, all encircled by raised beads inside the rim of the coin;”;

(g) by inserting after subparagraph (d) (v) the following subparagraph:

“(va) in the case of a coin of the denomination of 25 cents—a representation, in traditional Australian Aboriginal style, of 2 persons against a stippled background, the inscription ‘QUARTER OZ.•THE DUMP•999 SILVER’ and a reference (in figures) to the year of the coin, all encircled by raised beads inside the rim of the coin;”;

(h) by omitting from subparagraph (d) (viiiba) “sub-paragraph (viiibb) or (viiibc)” and substituting “subparagraph (viiibb), (viiibc) or (viiibca)”;

(i) by inserting after subparagraph (d) (viiibc) the following subparagraph:

“(viiibca) in the case of a holey dollar coin—a representation, in traditional Australian Aboriginal style, of a snake, the inscription ‘ONE OUNCE•THE HOLEY DOLLAR•999 SILVER’ and a reference (in figures) to the year of the coin, all encircled by raised beads inside the rim of the coin;”;

(j) by inserting in subparagraph (d) (viiif) “, other than a coin referred to in subparagraph (viiifa)” after “$15”;

(k) by inserting after subparagraph (d) (viiif) the following subparagraph:

“(viiifa) in the case of a coin of the denomination of $15 the composition of which is not less than 99.95% platinum—the inscription ‘THE AUSTRALIAN KOALA 1/10 OZ 9995 PLATINUM’, a representation of a koala and a reference (in figures) to the year of the coin;”;

(l) by inserting in subparagraph (d) (viiig) “, other than a coin referred to in subparagraph (viiiga)” after “$25”;

(m) by inserting after subparagraph (d) (viiig) the following subparagraph:

“(viiiga) in the case of a coin of the denomination of $25 the composition of which is not less than 99.95% platinum—the inscription ‘THE AUSTRALIAN KOALA 1/4 OZ 9995 PLATINUM’, a representation of a koala and a reference (in figures) to the year of the coin;”;

(n) by inserting in subparagraph (d) (viiih) “, other than a coin referred to in subparagraph (viiiha)” after “$50”;

(o) by inserting after subparagraph (d) (viiih) the following subparagraph:

“(viiiha) in the case of a coin of the denomination of $50 the composition of which is not less than 99.95% platinum—the inscription ‘THE AUSTRALIAN KOALA 1/2 OZ 9995 PLATINUM’, a representation of a koala and a reference (in figures) to the year of the coin;”;

(p) by inserting in subparagraph (d) (viiij) “, other than a coin referred to in subparagraph (viiija)” after “$100”;

(q) by inserting after subparagraph (d) (viiij) the following subparagraph:

“(viiija) in the case of a coin of the denomination of $100 the composition of which is not less than 99.95% platinum— the inscription ‘THE AUSTRALIAN KOALA 1 OZ 9995 PLATINUM’, a representation of a koala and a reference (in figures) to the year of the coin;”.

The Schedule to the Act

2. Regulation 7 of the Currency Regulations is amended by adding at the end the following subregulation:

“(5) The Act shall have effect, on and after 23 August 1988, as if:

(a) the reference in the Schedule to the Act, opposite to the reference to the denomination ‘One hundred dollars’, to the standard composition of coins of that denomination were a reference to the standard compositions ‘not less than 99.99% gold’ and ‘not less than 99.95% platinum’;

(b) the reference in that Schedule, opposite to the reference to the denomination ‘Fifty dollars’, to the standard composition of coins of that denomination were a reference to the standard compositions ‘not less than 99.99% gold’ and ‘not less than 99.95% platinum’;

(c) the reference in that Schedule, opposite to the reference to the denomination ‘Twenty-five dollars’, to the standard composition of coins of that denomination were a reference to the standard compositions ‘not less than 99.99% gold’ and ‘not less than 99.95% platinum’;

(d) the reference in that Schedule, opposite to the reference to the denomination ‘Fifteen dollars’, to the standard composition of coins of that denomination were a reference to the standard compositions ‘not less than 99.99% gold’ and ‘not less than 99.95% platinum’;

(e) the reference in that Schedule, opposite to the reference to the denomination ‘One dollar’, to the standard composition of coins of that denomination were a reference to the standard compositions ‘copper, aluminium and nickel’, ‘92.5% silver and 7.5% other metal’ and ‘not less than 99.9% silver’;

(f) there were included in that Schedule a reference to a denomination of ‘Twenty-five cents’; and

(g) there were specified in that Schedule opposite to that denomination of Twenty-five cents, as the standard composition of coins of that denomination, the standard composition ‘not less than 99.9% silver’.”.

3. The Schedule to the Currency Regulations is repealed and the following Schedule substituted:
