An Act to authorize the Treasurer to grant to the South Australian Housing Trust three hundred and sixty-eight thousand and nineteen pounds for the purpose of providing housing for persons of limited income.

BE IT ENACTED by the Governor of the State of South Australia, with the advice and consent of the Parliament thereof as follows:

Short title

1. This Act may be cited as the Country Housing Act, 1958.

Interpretation

2. In this Act—

"trust" means the South Australian Housing Trust.

Power of Treasurer to make grant to trust

3. The Treasurer may, from moneys granted to the State by the Commonwealth and appropriated by supplementary estimates pursuant to the Appropriation Act (No. 1), 1958, make a grant to the trust of the sum of three hundred and sixty-eight thousand and nineteen pounds.

Power of Treasurer to make additional grant to trust

3a. Notwithstanding anything in the Homes Act, 1941-1958, contained, the Treasurer may from moneys in the Home Purchase Guarantee Fund within the meaning of that Act make a grant to the trust of one hundred thousand pounds.

Application of grant

4. The trust shall expend the amounts granted to it under sections 3 and 3a of this Act in the building of houses in country areas which shall be let by the trust to persons of limited income.

Rents

5. Any house built as aforesaid shall be let by the trust at a weekly rent not exceeding one-sixth of the family income of the tenant thereof as determined by the trust but the minimum weekly rent to be charged shall be two dollars or such other amount as is prescribed by regulation. The Governor may make regulations prescribing the amount of the said minimum weekly rent.

Application of rents

6. The rents received by the trust in respect of the said houses, less any necessary outgoings, shall be expended by the trust in the building of further houses as provided by section 4.
