REGULATIONS UNDER THE CUSTOMS ACT 1901-1930 AND THE COMMERCE (TRADE DESCRIPTIONS) ACT 1905-1933.

Amendment of Commerce (General Exports) Regulations.
(Statutory Rules 1926, No. 22, as amended to this date.)
Regulation 21 of the Commerce (General Exports) Regulations is repealed and the following Regulation inserted in its stead:—
“21. Canned pineapples for export shall be prepared in accordance with such one of the following sets of conditions as is applicable to the description of the pineapples:—
(i) Sliced Pineapple describable as ‘Fancy Quality’—The fruit shall consist of whole-cored slices only, free from imperfections such as eyes, slashed sides or discolourations, and the colour, thickness and diameter of the slices shall be uniform. The slices shall fit the can. The syrup used shall be clear and shall contain 40 per centum by weight of cane sugar. Where cane sugar is directly placed in the can there shall be sufficient to give a cut out of 23 per centum Brix at 60° Fahrenheit. Not less than eight nor more than twelve slices shall be placed in any 30 ounce or 20 ounce can. The approximate weight of fresh fruit in any 30 ounce can shall be 21 ounces and that in any 20 ounce can shall be not less than 14 ounces.
(ii) Sliced Pineapple describable as ‘Choice Quality’—The fruit shall consist of whole-core slices comparatively free from slashed or macerated sides or other imperfections of workmanship, and free from eyes or discolouration, and the colour, thickness and diameter of the slices shall be uniform. The slices shall fit the can to a reasonable degree. The fruit shall be ripe. The syrup used shall be fairly clear and shall contain 30 per centum by weight

of cane sugar. Where cane sugar is directly placed in the can, there shall be sufficient to give a cut out of 20 per centum Brix at 60° Fahrenheit. Not less than eight nor more than twelve slices shall be placed in any 30 ounce or 20 ounce can. The approximate weight of fresh fruit in each 30ounce can shall be 21 ounces and that in any 20 ounce can shall be not less than 14 ounces.
(iii) Sliced Pineapple describable as ‘Standard Quality’—The fruit shall consist of cored slices but not necessarily whole-cored, fairly free from eyes and imperfections of workmanship and may include a number of semi-broken slices. The fruit shall be fresh, sound and ripe. The syrup used shall be fairly clear and shall contain 25 per centum by weight of cane sugar. Where cane sugar is directly placed in the can there shall be sufficient to give a cut out of 17 pee centum Brix at 60
° Fahrenheit. The can shall be filled with the fresh fruit.(iv) ‘Tit-bits’ or ‘Tid-bits’ Pineapple describable as ‘Fancy Quality’—The fruit shall consist of small portions of fresh pineapple free from imperfections such as eyes, slashed sides or discolourations and the colour and size shall be uniform. The syrup shall be clear and shall contain 40 per centum by weight of cane sugar. Where cane sugar is directly placed in the can, there shall be sufficient to give a cut out of 20 per centum Brix at 60° Fahrenheit. The can shall be filled with the fresh fruit.
(v) ‘Tit-bits’ or ‘Tid-bits’ Pineapple describable as ‘Choice Quality’ The fruit shall consist of small portions of ripe fresh pineapple, comparatively free from slashed or macerated sides and other imperfections of workmanship and free from eyes or discolouration and the colour and size shall be uniform. The syrup used shall be fairly clear and shall contain 30 per centum by weight of cane sugar. Where cane sugar is directly placed in the can, there shall be sufficient to give a cut out of 20 per centum Brix at 60° Fahrenheit. The can shall be filled with the fresh fruit.
(vi) ‘Tit-bits’ or ‘Tid-bits’ Pineapple describable as ‘Standard Quality’—The fruit shall consist of small portions of fresh pineapple fairly free from eyes and imperfections of workmanship. The fruit shall be fresh, sound and ripe. The syrup used shall be fairly clear and shall contain 25 per centum by weight of cane sugar. Where cane sugar is directly placed in the can, there shall be sufficient to give a cut out of 17 per centum Brix at 60° Fahrenheit. The can shall be filled with the fresh fruit.
(vii) Crushed or Grated Pineapple describable as ‘Fancy Quality’—The fruit shall be practically free from eyes, pieces of core and other imperfections. It shall be of uniform consistency and shall be packed in clear pineapple juice or in syrup containing 10 per centum by weight of cane sugar.
(viii) Crushed or Grated Pineapple describable as ‘Choice Quality’—The fruit shall be of a fairly firm consistency and as to nine-tenths thereof shall be free from eyes, pieces of core and other imperfections and shall be packed in clear pineapple juice or in syrup containing 10 per centum by weight of cane sugar.
(ix) Crushed or Grated Pineapple describable as ‘Standard Quality’—The fruit shall consist of the sound flesh of properly cored and trimmed pineapples which, because of imperfections, would be unsuitable for higher grading and shall be packed in clear pineapple juice orin syrup containing 10 per centum of cane sugar.
(x) Confectioners’ Sliced Pineapple for manufacturing or glace purposes—The fruit shall be clean and sound and the diameter and thickness of the slices shall be uniform. The fruit may be either ripe or unripe and cored or uncored. The labelled description shall be either ‘Confectioners’ Sliced Cored’ or ‘Confectioners’ Sliced Uncored’ as the case may be.
(xi) ‘Pineapple Cores’ for manufacturing or glace purposes—The fruit shall be clean and sound, and either sliced or whole. If it is sliced, the diameter and thickness of each slice shall be practically uniform. The fruit shall be described on the label as ‘Pineapple Cores’.”.
