MEDICAL RADIATION TECHNOLOGISTS ACT 2006

CODE OF ETHICS

The Code of Ethics of the Medical Radiation Technologists Registration Board of Western Australia (the Board) sets out the principles, beliefs and values the Board has identified as fundamental professional standards necessary to discharge the duties of a Medical Radiation Technologists (Medical Imaging Technologists, Radiation Therapists and Nuclear Medicine Technologists) registered under the Medical Radiation Technologists Act 2006 (the Act).
All Medical Radiation Technologists have a personal and professional responsibility to ensure they commit themselves to the values in the Code of Ethics.
Value 1 of services and in the non-discriminatory provision of these services.
Explanation
Medical Radiation Technologists shall—

•

acknowledge the diversity of Australia’s multicultural society and will provide non- discriminatory services to all people regardless of age, colour, gender, sexuality, religion, political allegiance, type of illness, ethnicity, race and mental or physical status;

•

ensure they treat all members of the community for whom they provide services with respect and dignity;

•

acknowledge there is a power imbalance in the relationship between themselves and persons receiving their services and ensure they maintain an appropriate professional relationship with those for whom they provide services; and

•

promote a culture of good conduct, confidence, integrity and trust with members of their profession towards those for whom they provide services.
Value 2 relation to the services being provided.
Explanation
Medical Radiation Technologists shall—

•

provide adequate and appropriate information and explanation regarding services being provided (including any possible side effects), honestly and in a way those receiving the services can readily understand;
• ensure they have a person’s informed consent for the service being provided;

•

recognise the explanation of treatment and informed consent is especially vital when those receiving the services are participating in research trials; and

•

respect the right of individuals to seek another opinion relating to the services being provided and to decide to refuse service.
Value 3
Ensure quality and safety in their provision of services for all people.
Explanation
Medical Radiation Technologists shall—

•

conduct all procedures and examinations in keeping with current radiation safety protocols and legislative standards;

•

practice only those procedures for which they are qualified and eligible to practice consistent with their registration with the Board; and

•

acknowledge their patient is their primary concern and ensure they provide the appropriate procedure consistent with the medical history of the patient.
Value 4 capacity.
Explanation
Medical Radiation Technologists shall—

•

respect a person’s right to determine who will be provided with their personal information and ensure that patient information is managed in accordance with legal obligations in relation to patient confidentiality and privacy; and

•

use judgement consistent with privacy principles when sharing information for the benefit of an individual.

Have regard to the need for accountability and responsibility inherent in their roles.

Explanation
Medical Radiation Technologists shall—

•

be professionally accountable for their clinical decision making and have an ethical and legal obligation to ensure safety and quality in the provision of services;

•

acknowledge the collaborative nature of multidisciplinary health care teams and recognise and respect the perspective and expertise of colleagues and other health care professionals;

•

deal with complaints or adverse events involving the services they provide in an open and honest manner that allows redress in the event of injury;

•

have an ethical responsibility to report instances of unsafe and unethical practice to the relevant authority and to support colleagues who appropriately notify the relevant authorities of unsafe and unethical practice; and

•

acknowledge their responsibility to comply with the provisions of the Medical Radiation Technologists Act 2006, the Medical Radiation Technologists Regulations 2007 and any orders made by the Board.
