W H E R E A S it is expedient to regula te the size and weight of baskets fore enacted by the Queen 's Most Excellent Majesty, by and with the carr ied by lumpers in handl ing or removing coal : Be it there­

made on the inside, and shall not exceed th i r ty pounds in weight.

1. This Act may be cited as the " Coal-lumpers Baskets Act of

1900. "
2. All baskets used by coal-lumpers for the purpose of ca r ry ing

coal shall not exceed the following dimensions—that is to say, twenty- three inches in d iameter across the top, nineteen inches in depth, and sixteen inches in d iameter on the bottom, all such measurements to be

Any coal-lumper who knowingly carr ies , and every person who directly or indirectly causes to be used in the ca r ry ing of coal, any basket exceeding the dimensions and weight in the last preceding section mentioned shall, on conviction in every case, be liable to a penal ty not exceeding forty shillings, together with such costs and expenses as may be adjudged.

4. All offences under this Act may be heard and determined, and all penalt ies may be recovered in a summary way before any two or more justices of the peace in accordance with the provisions of the Acts regula t ing summary proceedings before justices, and payment of any penal ty incurred hereunder , together with costs and expenses, may be enforced by dis t ress and sale of the offender 's goods and chattels.
5. I n this Act " coal-lumper " means any person engaged in the occupying of ca r ry ing coal by manual labour, whether such occupation shall be of a pe rmanent or t empora ry na ture .

6. This Act shall commence and have effect on and after the first day of F e b r u a r y , one thousand nine hundred and one.
