MASON CJ: This ceremony marks the commencement of the
Court's legal year. It brings the Court and the
Bar together on what is an auspicious occasion for
those of you who have recently been appointed
Queen's Counsel and what is for the Court its one
regular ceremonial sitting each year. The ceremony marks the interdependence of the Bench and
the Bar in our adversary system of justice.
Justice and its efficient administration depends
not only upon the skill, experience and fairness
of the judges; it depends also upon an able, energetic and conscientious profession dedicated to
the service of the community. The courts and the profession have onerous responsibilities. The way in which they discharge those responsibilities is
naturally a matter of community concern. Counsel,
as well as judges, have an obligation, within the
limits of their respective functions, to play a part
in ensuring that our system is just, efficient andaccessible.
On behalf of all the Justices of the Court I
congratulate those of you who have announced your
appointment as Queen's Counsel. Your appointment is a recognition of your skill
and experience and evidences the high regard
in which you are held professionally. Above
all else, your appointment indicates your
quality as a leader in the professional sense of
that term. Your past success, though not a guarantee of future success in your new role, is
at least a favourable omen of things to come.
As most cases in this Court are presented by
Queen's Counsel, it is likely that you will play a
greater part in the presentation of argument
here than you have done in the past.
Your new commissions bring a range of new
obligations. Your capacity to provide leadership
and guidance to the profession has been enhanced.
Your additional responsibilities will present new challenges. In meeting them, we trust that you
enjoy success, satisfaction and enjoyment.
