Exemption, approval and direction — operation of model aircraft using first person view technology (Australian Miniature Aerosports Society)

1          Duration

                 This instrument

(a)   commences on the day of registration; and

(b)   is repealed at the end of 29 February 2020.

2          Definitions

              In this instrument:

AMAS member means a member of the Australian Miniature Aerosports Society Inc., ARN 831307 (AMAS).

first person view technology means technology enabling a model aircraft to be piloted by an AMAS member:

(a)   without the AMAS member having direct line of sight of the model aircraft; and

(b)   using a live video downlink from a camera fixed to the model aircraft.

FPV Manual means the First Person View (FPV) Operation Manual that has been accepted by CASA and published by AMAS, as existing from time to time.

3          Application

                 This instrument applies in relation to the operation of a model aircraft by an AMAS member using first person view technology.

4          Exemption

        (1)     An AMAS member is exempt from compliance with subregulation 101.385 (1) of CASR if the AMAS member operates a model aircraft using first person view technology.

        (2)     It is a condition of the exemption in subsection (1) that the AMAS member must operate the model aircraft in accordance with the FPV Manual.

5          Approval

        (1)     For subregulation 101.073 (1) of CASR, the AMAS member is approved to operate a model aircraft beyond the AMAS member’s visual line of sight.

        (2)     It is a condition of the approval in subsection (1) that the AMAS member must operate the model aircraft in accordance with the FPV Manual.

6          Direction

              CASA directs AMAS to amend the FPV Manual only in accordance with the prior written approval of CASA.
