Specification — examinations for aircraft maintenance engineer licence category airframes
1 Commencement
This instrument commences on the day after it is registered.
2 Specification — examinations for licence or additional ratings
For subsection 6 of CAO 100.91, the examinations mentioned in Schedule 1 are specified for the grant of a licence, or endorsement of additional ratings for a specific aircraft type, for the category airframes.
Schedule 1 Examinations for category airframes
1 Core subject examinations
The core subject examinations for a licence group in table 1 of this Schedule (table 1) are indicated by the symbol * in the column for the licence group.
2 Specific group subject examinations
(1) The specific group subject examinations for a licence group in table 1 are indicated by the symbol * in the column for the licence group.
(2) Subject to subclause (3), the specific group subject examinations for licence group 20 in table 1 for a specific aircraft type are indicated by the symbol # in the column for licence group 20.
(3) For licence group 20 in table 1, a candidate must pass the specific group subject examinations only in the systems (including structures or fabrics) installed on the specific aircraft type for which the rating is sought.
3 Specific aircraft type examinations
The specific aircraft type examinations for licence group 20 in table 1 are those:
(a) indicated by the symbol # in the column for licence group 20; and
(b) comprising an assessment of the assembly, functioning and principles of construction of, and the methods and procedures for the maintenance of, the airframe category of the specific aircraft type.
4 Credits and waivers
(1) A person is not required to pass the examination in electrical and instrument systems (code BC) for a licence group if the person holds a credit for passing each of the following examinations for the licence group:
(a) Aircraft general instruments – I (code IA);
(b) Aircraft general instruments – II (code IZ);
(c) General electrical systems (code EB).
Note The examination coded EB is prescribed in the Specification under CAO 100.94 for category electrical. The examinations coded IA and IZ are prescribed in the Specification under CAO 100.95 for category instruments.
(1A) A person is not required to pass the examination in Airworthiness administration (code AA) for a licence group if:
(a) the person has knowledge of Module 10, Aviation Legislation, in Part 3, Appendix 4 of Civil Aviation Order 100.66 (CAO 100.66); and
(b) the person has demonstrated the knowledge by successful examination for clause 13 of CAO 100.66; and
(c) the knowledge training and examination were conducted by a recognised organisation under CAO 100.66 that is approved in writing for this subclause.
Note CASA approval is dependent on CASA’s satisfaction that, through Module 10, the recognised organisation can train and examine in the comprehensive specifics of Airworthiness administration (code AA) for a licence group.
(1B) A person is not required to pass the examination in Structural composites (code FP) for a licence group in category airframes, if:
(a) the person has successfully completed training and examination in Course AA-27, Composites Repair Techniques (Theory); and
(b) the training and examination were conducted by Aviation Australia Pty Ltd in its capacity as the holder of a Certificate of Approval for such training and examination under regulation 30 of the Civil Aviation Regulations 1988.
Note This course of training and examination has been specifically developed, to CASA’s satisfaction, as an alternative to examination in Structural composites (code FP) for a licence group in category airframes.
(2) CASA may waive the requirement for the written examination (code FS) mentioned in table 1 for a specific aircraft type if:
(a) the specific aircraft type is so similar to another aircraft type for which the applicant already holds the category airframes rating that the applicant may be taken to have adequate knowledge of the airframes category for the specific aircraft type; and
(b) the safety of air navigation will not be affected by the waiver.
(3) CASA may waive the requirement for the oral examination (code FO) mentioned in table 1 for a specific aircraft type if:
(a) the person obtains, and records in a schedule of experience, appropriate practical experience on the aircraft type; and
(b) the safety of air navigation will not be affected by the waiver.
5 Definition
In this Schedule:
specific aircraft type includes the specific engine type installed in the specific aircraft type for which the rating is sought.
