Australian Maritime College Academic Board Rules (22/03/2002) (Cth)
Pursuant to the General Management Statute the Council hereby:
(a) repeals the “Academic Board Rules” made on the twelfth day of December, 1982, and amended on the eighteenth day of May, 1988, the seventeenth day of June 1993, the twenty-eighth day of March 1996, the sixteenth day of September 1999; the sixteenth day of November 2000;
(b) makes the following Rules

These Rules may be cited as the Academic Board Rules.
The Academic Board
(a) shall have the power on its own motion, or at the request of the Council, to make recommendations or furnish reports to the Council on any matter affecting the academic work of the AMC;
(b) shall consider and take action on any report or submission sent to it by Council, Principal, Course Committees, or Committees of the Academic Board and any such other reports or submissions which it may, from time to time, call for or receive;
(c) may refer matters to Course Committees for consideration and report;
(d) may consider any questions relating to courses of study within the AMC and shall approve for transmission to Council such course proposals as it sees fit;
(e) shall decide all questions of student progress in courses and shall exercise the powers and functions conferred on it by the Statutes and Rules of the AMC;
(f) may, having regard to conditions, if any, requested by the founder or donor, recommend to Council the conditions of competition for any fellowship. scholarship or prize;
(g) shall receive and consider reports of the Course Committees and committees of the Academic Board;
(h) may advise the Principal on the implication of academic policy for capital works and recurrent expenditure;
3.1 The Academic Board shall consist of:
Ex-Officio Members (a) the Principal
(b) the Directors
(c) the Program Heads (FME)
(d) the Heads of Department (MTE)
(e) the Librarian
(f) the Registrar
(g) the Student Association Elected Representative
Appointed Members (h) four academic staff appointed by the Academic Board on an annual basis, will be from May each year
3.2 Individuals may be co-opted as required.
3.3 In exceptional circumstances, and with the consent of the Chairperson, individual presentations may be made to Academic Board by staff other than board members.
The Academic Board shall be empowered to set up such committees as it considers necessary from time to time. Any committee so established shall be constituted and shall act within such delegated areas of responsibility as are specified by the Academic Board.
5.1 The Chairperson of the Academic Board shall be elected from amongst the membership of the Board by a simple majority of the members voting. In his or her absence the Chair shall be a member chosen by the Academic Board.
5.2 The Chairperson shall hold office for a period of two years. The incumbent Chairperson shall be permitted to stand for election for a maximum of three consecutive terms.
5.3 The Chairperson of the Academic Board holds office as a member of the Council while he or she holds office as the Chairperson of the Academic Board.
The Registrar or delegate shall act as Secretary to the Academic Board.

In the case of the absence from the AMC of a member of the Academic Board due to illness, study leave, transfer of duties or similar reasons, where no "acting" appointment has been made, the Board, the Chairperson or the appropriate Director may appoint a person to attend a meeting or meetings in the member's absence provided that the person appointed is a member of the staff, or a student, of the AMC. At meetings, a substitute member shall be entitled to the same voting and speaking rights as permanent members.
Subject to these rules the Academic Board may adopt its own procedures for the convening of and conduct of proceedings at meetings.
The frequency of meetings of the Academic Board in ordinary sessions shall be in accordance with the need to prepare matters for reference to Council being matters which are the responsibility of the Board, and at such other times as it shall decide.
A special meeting of the Academic Board
(a) may be convened by the Chairperson, or
(b) shall be convened within fourteen days by the Secretary on the written request of five members setting forth the purpose for which the meeting is required to be convened
11.1 The Board shall not make decisions in the absence of a quorum.
11.2 A quorum shall consist of a majority of members for the time being, including the nominees referred to in Rule 7.
