AN ACT to amend the Australasian Federation

Enabling Act of 1896, and for other purposes

[ Assented to, 12th March, ig97.

HEREAS difficulties have arisen in conducting , in accordance elections of persons to represent Western Australia at the Con- vention in the said Act mentioned, and it is desirable to alter the arrangements for such election, and to ratify the proceedings already adopted as preliminary thereto: Be it therefore enacted by the Queen's Most Excellent. Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly of Western Australia, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:-

2.      THE writ issued by the Governor under the seal of this Colony,

-Validation of writ of and set forth in the Schedule hereto, shall be as valid and effectual

22nd February, 1897. for the purpose of elections under the principal Act as if it had

been wholly in accordance with the requirements of the said Act.

3.     THE thirteenth section of the principal Act is hereby

The words " Not less than fifteen days shall respectively elapse between—(a.) The date of the writ and the day of nomination ; (b.) The day of nomination and the day of

polling " are struck out, and in lieu thereof the following

words are inserted, namely, " Not less than fifteen days shall elapse between the date of the writ and the day of nomination, and not less than two days shall elapse between the day of nomination and the day of polling."

4.     THE polling for the election of persons to represent

horns of ten o'clock in the forenoon and noon, and the persons then elected shall be deemed the persons lawfully elected to represent Western Australia in the said Convention.

THE SCHEDULE.

Section 2.

VICTORIA, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain

and Ireland Queen, Defender of the Faith, &c., &c.

To the Returning Officer for the Election of the Representatives of Western Australia as Members of the Convention under the "Australasian Federation Enabling Act, 1896." •

GREETING :

WE command you that you proceed, according to law, to the Election of Ten

Members to represent Western Australia in the Convention established under the "Australasian Federation Enabling Act, 1896;" And we do hereby appoint Wednesday, the 10th day of March, in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and ninety-seven, to be the day, and do also appoint the Legislative Assembly Chamber, Perth, to be the place of nomination of Candidates at the said Election, and the place where such Election shall be held : And we do further command you that, in the event of the said Election being contested, the poll shall be taken between the hours of Ten o'clock in the forenoon and Noon only,•on Saturday, the 13th day of March, at the place aforesaid: And that you do endorse hereon the names of the persons elected, and do return forthwith this our Writ so endorsed to the Governor of our Colony of Western Australia, at Perth.
