AMENDMENT OF THE PUBLIC HEALTH (GENERAL SANITATION)

REGULATIONS, t

Regulation 25 of the Public Health (General Sanitation) Regulations is

repealed and the following regulation inserted in its stead:—
"25.—(1.) A builder shall not carry out work on the erection of a Temporary
building, the alteration of the structure of a building, the additions to a Iccommoda-
building or the extension of a building unless he provides, on the land on tion.
which the building is, or is to be, erected, sanitary conveniences for the

use of himself and workmen engaged on the work.

" (2.) Where—

(a) a building is to be erected on land on which no existing sani-

tary conveniences are provided; or

(b) a building is to be altered, added to or extended and the sanitary conveniences on the land on which the building is erected are not made available for use by the workmen engaged on the work,

the builder shall provide for the use of the workmen engaged on the work a closet or, if more than ten workmen are employed on the work, one closet for each ten workmen or part of ten workmen employed on the work.

" (3.) A closet to be provided in accordance with this regulation shall

be a water closet, a chemical closet or an earth closet.

" (4.) Where a water closet is provided in accordance with this regula- tion, it shall comply with the requirements relating to water closets con- tained in the Canberra Sewerage and Water Supply Regulations.

" (5.) Where an earth closet is provided in accordance with this

regulation—

(a) the closet shall have a floor of cement, concrete or other

impervious material;

(b) the closet shall have, as internal measurements, a width of not less than three feet six inches, a length of not less than four feet six inches and a height, measured from the upper surface of the floor to the springing of the roof, of not less than seven feet;

(c) the closet shall be fitted with a self-closing door of weatherproof material capable of being fastened from the inside and the outside;

(d) the closet shall have walls and a roof of weatherproof material;
(e) the closet shall be so constructed as to ensure privacy;
(/) the closet shall be fitted with a movable box which is no larger

than is necessary to enclose the pan provided for the closet and has a height not exceeding sixteen inches above the level of the floor; and

(g) the box shall have a suitable opening and shall be fitted with a

hinged lid which is so constructed that—

(i) the lid covers the opening in the box;
(ii) the box is fly-proof when the lid is closed; and

(iii) the lid may be completely removed for the purpose

of removing the pan.

" (6.) A builder who provides an earth closet in accordance with this regulation shall cause the pan provided for the closet to be emptied and its contents disposed of once in each week.
" (7.) A builder who provides a sanitary convenience for use by himself
and workmen engaged on work of a kind referred to in sub-regulation (1.)
of this regulation shall keep the convenience in a clean and tidy condition.

" ( 8 . ) In this regulation, 'bui lder ' means the holder of a builder's licence, or a builder's special licence, issued under the Canberra Building Regulations.".
