AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Thielert Piston Engines

AD/THIELERT/10 Time Limits/Maintenance Checks 9/2008

Applicability:

Thielert Aircraft Engines GmbH. TAE 125-01 engines.

Note 1:  These engines are known to be installed on, but not limited to, Cessna 172 and (Reims-built) F172 series (EASA STC Nr. EASA.A.S.01527); Piper PA-28 series (EASA STC Nr. EASA.A.S.01632), APEX (Robin) DR 400 series (EASA STC Nr. EASA.A.S.01380); and Diamond DA40 and DA42 aircraft.

Requirement:

1.    Amend the approved engine maintenance schedule to incorporate the instructions of Chapter 5 “Airworthiness Limitations” of OM-02-01 Issue 3 Revision 5.

2.    Accomplish the tasks in accordance with the instructions of Chapter 5 “Airworthiness Limitations” of OM-02-01 Issue 3 Revision 5.

The use of later approved revisions of this document is acceptable for compliance with the requirements of this AD.

Note 2:  EASA AD 2008-0128 dated 9 July 2008 refers.

Compliance:

For Requirement 1 - Within the next 3 months after the effective date of this AD, unless previously accomplished.

For Requirement 2 - Within the thresholds and intervals defined from the time the amendment is made to the schedule in accordance with Requirement 1 of this AD.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 28 August 2008.

Background:

As a consequence of occurrences and service experience, Thielert Aircraft Engines GmbH has amended the ALS of the Operation & Maintenance Manual OM-02-01 to include an inspection of the alternator 14V P/N 02-7150-5502R3, and a replacement of the rail pressure valve.  Failure of these parts could result in in-flight shut downs of the engine(s).
