AD/Stinson 108/3 Rudder Cables - Inspection/Replacement (Cth)

AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

On the effective date specified below, and for the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001 (1) of CASR. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct an unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Univair Aircraft (Stinson) 108 Series Aeroplanes

AD/STINSON 108/3 Rudder Cables - Inspection / Replacement 18/2018

Applicability:

All Univair Aircraft Corporation Stinson 108 series aircraft.

Requirement:

1.    Remove rudder cables from the pulleys, bend the cables in a tight “U” where the cables pass over the pulley being careful that permanent kinks are not formed, and inspect either visually or by touch for signs of core strand breakage.

2.    Replace all cables showing any signs of core strand breakage.

Note 1:  The Requirement 1 inspection may be discontinued upon completion of the pulley modification detailed in Stinson Service Bulletin 266 dated 1 February 1950, as in force at the commencement of this AD.

Note 2:  FAA AD 50-17-02 and Stinson Service Bulletin 266 dated 1 February 1950 refer.

Compliance:

1.    Within 25 hours’ time in service after the commencement date of this AD, unless previously accomplished, and thereafter at intervals not to exceed 100 hours’ time in service.

2.    Before further flight.

This AD commences on 14 September 2018.

Background:

A number of cases have been reported of broken core strands in rudder cables where they pass over the pulley at fuselage Station 18.75.  This AD is issued to detect and replace rudder cables showing signs of core strand breakage.
