Eurocopter AS 332 (Super Puma) Series Helicopters

AD/S-PUMA/63 CPI 503 Emergency Locator Transmitter 11/2005 DM

Applicability:

AS 332 L2 helicopters equipped with a type CPI 503 (Crash Position Indicator) Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) fitted with an Interface Unit Part Number (P/N) 503-24 (704A45737061) with a serial number in the range from 100 up to and including 125.

Requirement:

1.    Check the serial number of the Interface Unit in accordance with the procedure detailed in Section 2 of Eurocopter AS 332 Alert Telex (AT) 25.01.67 dated 16 August 2005 or later revision approved by the French Direction Générale de l’Aviation Civile (DGAC).

2.    If the serial number falls with in the range specified in AT 25.01.67 contact Eurocopter Customer Service Technical Support Operations Department, as detailed in the AT, for instructions regarding the replacement of the Interface Unit.

3.    Interface Unit Part Number (P/N) 503-24 (704A45737061) with a serial number in the range from 100 up to and including 125 may not be installed on any helicopter as a replacement spare unless Requirement 2 has been complied with.

Note:  DGAC AD F-2005-154 (EASA Approval 2005-6189) refers.

Compliance:

For Requirement 1 - No later than one month after the effective date of this Directive.

For Requirement 2 - Immediately following completion of the Requirement 1 check.

For Requirement 3 - Prior to installation on a helicopter.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 5 September 2005.

Background:

The DGAC has received two reports of inadvertent ejections of the ELT on AS 332 L2 helicopters due to manufacturing defects on a printed circuit card in the Interface Unit which resulted in electrical short circuits.

This Directive requires an initial inspection to determine if any affected Interface Units are installed in helicopters and ultimately their replacement with serviceable items.
