AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

On the effective date specified below, and for the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below revokes Airworthiness Directive (AD) AD/ROTAX/17 Amdt 1 and issues the following AD under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

AD/ROTAX/17 Amdt 2 Engine Crankcase Cracks 6/2007

Applicability:

Rotax 912 A series engines up to serial number (S/N) 4,410.689 inclusive;

Rotax 912 F series engines up to S/N 4,412.914 inclusive;

Rotax 912 S series engines up to S/N 4,923.308 inclusive;

Rotax 914 F series engines up to S/N 4,420.606 inclusive;

And any other Rotax type 912 and 914 series engine whose crankcase assembly has been replaced by a crankcase having an S/N up to S/N 27811 inclusive.

Requirement:

Carry out an inspection of the engine crankcase for cracks and oil leaks as detailed in BRP-Rotax Mandatory Service Bulletins, SB-912-029 R3 or later approved revision or SB-914-018 R3 or later approved revision as is applicable.

In lieu of the inspecting of the engine crankcase assembly a review of the engine logbook or maintenance records is acceptable provide the crankcase serial number can be clearly identified as not been in the serial number range of this AD.

Note:  EASA AD 2007-0025 dated 1 February 2007 refers.  This AD supersedes Austro Control GmbH AD A-2004-01.

Compliance:

Within 110 flight hours from the last inspection carried out in accordance with the amendment 1 of this AD and thereafter at intervals not to exceed 110 flight hours.

This Amendment becomes effective on 7 June 2007.

Background:

The initial issue of this directive addressed an unsafe condition caused by cracks on the Rotax engine crankcases and required inspection at the regular intervals.

Amendment 1 addressed the same unsafe condition but expanded the applicability list and additional inspections as detailed in revised Service Bulletin by the manufacturer and the Austrian ACG Airworthiness Directive.

Amendment 2 amends the applicability section of this AD and reflects the latest revision of the manufacturer’s service bulletin.

The original issue of this directive became effective on 27 November 2003.

Amendment 1 of this AD became effective on 25 November 2004.
