AD/Premier/2 Starter Generator Shimming (Cth)
AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE
For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

| a. If both starter-generators are identified as being improperly shimmed: | |
| (i) Replace at least one affected starter-generator, and | |
| (ii) Replace the other affected starter-generator. | |
| b. If only one starter-generator is identified as being improperly shimmed, replace the affected starter-generator. | |
| 3. Starter-generators with RAC P/N 390-389001-0001 or AI P/N MG94A-1 that is specified in paragraph 3.A.(2) of SB 24-3790 Issued August 2006 may not be installed on any aeroplane as a replacement spare. | |
| Later revisions of the above SB, approved by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an Alternate Method of Compliance (AMOC) to FAA AD 2007-20-07, is/are considered acceptable for compliance with the equivalent Requirements of this Directive. | |
| Note 2: FAA AD 2007-20-07 Amdt 39-15217 refers. |
Compliance: | For Requirement 1 - Within the next 50 hours time-in-service (TIS) after the effective date of this Directive or within the next 3 months after the effective date of this Directive, whichever occurs first. |
| For Requirement 2.a. - | |
| (i) Within 10 hours TIS after the Requirement 1 inspection. | |

| For Requirement 2.b. - Within the next 200 hours TIS after the effective date of this Directive or within the next 12 months after the effective date of this Directive, whichever occurs first. | |
| For Requirement 3 - Immediately following the Requirement 1 inspection. | |
| This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 7 November 2007. | |
Background: | The FAA has received reports of a manufacturing error where certain starter-generators may have been improperly shimmed. Improperly shimmed starter-generators could result in premature starter-generator failure. This failure could lead to increased chances of dual starter-generator failure on the same flight. |
| This Directive is issued to ensure any improperly shimmed starter-generators and detected and replaced. |
