AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

On the effective date specified below, and for the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below revokes Airworthiness Directive (AD) AD/JT9D/37 and issues the following AD under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Pratt and Whitney Turbine Engines - JT9D Series

AD/JT9D/37 Amdt 1 Inspection of Life Limited Parts 5/2007

Applicability:

Pratt & Whitney (PW) JT9D-3A, -7, -7A, - 7H, -7AH, -7F, -7J, -20J, -59A, -70A,
-7Q, -7Q3, -7R4D, -7R4D1, - 7R4E, -7R4E1, -7R4E4, -7R4G2, and -7R4H1 series turbofan engines.

These engines are installed on, but not limited to, Boeing 747 and 767 series, McDonnell Douglas DC-10 series, and Airbus Industrie A300 and A310 series airplanes.

Requirement:

Unless already accomplished, amend the Engine - Time Limits - Airworthiness Limitation sections of the applicable Engine Manuals to include the inspection requirements per FAA AD 2007-05-17.

Note:  FAA AD 2007-05-17 Amendment 39-14978 refers. FAA AD 2007-05-17 supersedes FAA AD 2002-08-11 Amendment 39-12719.

Compliance:

Within 180 days after the effective date of this AD.

This Amendment becomes effective on 10 May 2007.

Background:

FAA/Industry safety analysis of uncontained failures have identified the need for additional inspections of life limited components to prevent uncontained engine failures. Actions specified in this directive result from that analysis.

The current amendment makes reference to the latest FAA Airworthiness Directive 2007-05-17.

The original issue of this AD became effective on 8 August 2002.
