AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below revokes Airworthiness Directive (AD) AD/JT8D/38 and issues the following AD under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Pratt and Whitney Turbine Engines - JT8D Series

AD/JT8D/38 Amdt 1 Critical Life-limited Rotating Engine Components 7/2005

Applicability:

Pratt & Whitney (PW) JT8D-1, -1A, -1B, -7, -7A, -7B, -9, -9A, -11, -15, - 15A, -17,
-17A, -17R, and -17AR series turbofan engines.

Requirement:

To prevent uncontained failure of the critical rotating parts and resultant unsafe condition, revise the Time Limits Section (TLS) of the JT8D Engine Manual Part Number (P/N) 481672 to the latest FAA approved revision; and amend the engine inspection schedule detailed in the operator’s CASA approved System of Maintenance to reflect the “Critical Life Limited Part Inspection” section in accordance with the Requirements of FAA Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2002-17-02 Amendment 39-12867.

Note:  FAA AD 2002-17-02 Amendment 39-12867 dated 24 February 2003 refers.

Compliance:

Unless previously accomplished, as per compliance schedule of the FAA AD
2002-17-02 Amendment 39-12867.

This Amendment becomes effective on 7 July 2005.

Background:

The mandatory inspections are needed to identify those critical rotating parts with conditions, which if allowed to continue in service, could result in uncontained failures.  The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent critical life-limited rotating engine part failure, which could result in an uncontained engine failure and damage to the aircraft.

The amendment was necessary to make reference to the latest FAA AD on the subject.  Current amendment of the AD requires modification of the airworthiness limitations section of the manufacturer's manual and Regular Passenger Transport (RPT) Operators' approved System of Maintenance program to incorporate additional inspection requirements.

The original issue of this Airworthiness Directive became effective on 10 August 2000.
