AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

On the effective date specified below, and for the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below revokes Airworthiness Directive (AD) AD/ERJ-170/7 and issues the following AD under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Embraer ERJ-170 Series Aeroplanes

AD/ERJ-170/7 Amdt 1 Aft Avionics Compartment Smoke Seal 8/2008

Applicability:

Model ERJ 170-100 LR, ERJ 170-100 STD, and ERJ 170-100 SU aircraft, as identified in Embraer Service Bulletins 170-21-0017 Revision 01 and 170-21-0018 Revision 03, or later ANAC approved revisions.

Requirement:

Action in accordance with the requirements of ANAC AD 2006-05-04R1 Amdt
39-1233.

Note:  Accomplishment of Part II of Requirement document is considered terminating action for the Part I Requirement document inspection requirement.

Compliance:

For Part I of the Requirement document:  Unless the initial Part I inspection is already accomplished, within 600 flight hours after 10 May 2007.  Inspect thereafter at intervals not to exceed 1,200 flight hours until accomplishment of Part II.

For Part II of the Requirement document:  Within 6,000 flight hours after
10 May 2007, unless already accomplished.

The compliance times remain unchanged by this issue of the Directive.

This Amendment becomes effective on 31 July 2008.

Background:

Reports were received of damage to the smoke seal installed in the aft electronics compartment.  Such damage could result in smoke or other hazardous gas or vapour penetration into the passenger cabin.

Amendment 1 is issued in response to a revision of the related ANAC AD, which was issued to clarify applicability.
