AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Embraer ERJ-170 Series Aeroplanes

AD/ERJ-170/7 Aft Avionics Compartment Smoke Seal 5/2007

Applicability:

All Model ERJ-170 aircraft.

Requirement:

Part I

Carry out a detailed inspection of the smoke seal sections of the aft electronics compartment for damage in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions of Embraer Service Bulletin No. 170-21-0017 Revision 01, or later ANAC approved revision.

Part II

Replace all smoke seal sections of the aft electronics compartment with new ones in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions of Embraer Service Bulletin No. 170-21-0018 Revision 1, or later ANAC approved revision.

Note 1:  Accomplishment of Requirement Part II of this Directive is considered terminating action for the Requirement Part I inspection requirement.

Note 2:  ANAC AD 2006-05-04 Amdt 39-1133 refers.

Compliance:

For Part I: Unless the initial Part I inspection is already accomplished, within 600 flight hours after 10 May 2007.  Inspect thereafter at intervals not to exceed 1200 flight hours; until accomplishment of Part II.

For Part II: Within 6,000 flight hours after 10 May 2007, unless already accomplished.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 10 May 2007.

Background:

Reports were received of damage to the smoke seal installed in the aft electronics compartment.  Such damage could result in smoke or other hazardous gas or vapour penetration into the passenger cabin.
