AD/ERJ-170/5 Ice Detection System (Cth)
AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE
For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.
Embraer ERJ-170 Series Aeroplanes

Applicability: | ERJ-170( ) model aeroplanes. |
Requirement: | Carry out an ice detection system operational test in accordance with AMM TASK 30-81-01-710-801-A. |
| Installation of Primus EPIC system software Load 15.3 or higher in accordance with Embraer Service Bulletin 170-31-0002, original issue, or later revision approved by either the Brazilian Departamento de Avição Civil (DAC) or Agência Nacional de Avição Civil (ANAC) constitutes terminal action for the repetitive tests. | |

Compliance: | Within 100 hours time in service (TIS) after the effective date of this Directive or when the aircraft accumulates a total of 1000 hours TIS and thereafter at intervals not to exceed 1000 hours TIS until the installation of Primus EPIC system software Load 15.3 or higher is accomplished. |

Background: | The Brazilian DAC has advised that a particular failure mode of the aircraft ice detection system is not adequately tested by the software of the Primus EPIC Modular Avionics Unit, which can allow the operation of the aircraft without the required ice protection. |
