AD/ERJ-170/1 Amdt 3 Cargo Doors (Cth)
AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE
On the effective date specified below, and for the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below revokes Airworthiness Directive (AD) AD/ERJ-170/1 Amdt 2 and issues the following AD under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Applicability: | Models ERJ 170-100 LR, -100 STD, -100 SE, -100 SU, -200 LR, -200 STD, and -200 SU aircraft. |
Requirement: | 1. Accomplish a visual inspection to check that the forward and aft cargo doors are flush with the fuselage skin when closed, latched and locked, in accordance with the approved Minimum Equipment List procedures for cargo doors inoperative position indication, Chapter 52 “Doors”, item 70-00. 2. Accomplish the following actions on the forward and aft cargo doors: a. Remove and discard the cover plate from the door surround trim lining in accordance with Embraer Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) No. 170-52-A036, or later ANAC approved revision. b. Accomplish a detailed visual inspection for signs of interference of the door handle with the aft edge liner assembly: (i) If any interference is found, rework the aft edge liner assembly in accordance with Embraer Service Bulletin No. 170-50-0006, or later ANAC approved revision. (ii) If no interference is found, rework the aft edge liner in accordance with Embraer Service Bulletin No. 170-50-0006, or later ANAC approved revision. c. Remove the aft surround trim lining and accomplish a detailed visual inspection for signs of damage of the lateral roller fitting on the fuselage forward and aft cargo door frames in accordance with Embraer ASB (i) If any damage is found, replace the lateral roller fitting with a serviceable bearing with the same part number. (ii) If no damage is found, no immediate action is required. 3. Repeat the Requirement 2.c. requirements. |
| 4. Accomplish the following actions on the fore and aft cargo doors: a. Relocate the cargo door closed indication sensor in accordance with Embraer SB No. 170-52-0041 original issue, or later ANAC approved revision; b. Modify the cargo door lock handle mechanism and replace the fore and aft cargo door roller fittings part number 170-92569-401 and 170-85452-401 with new fitting part numbers 170-92569-403 and 170-85452-403, respectively; in accordance with Embraer SB No. 170-52-0044 original issue, or later ANAC approved revision; 5. After accomplishment of Requirement 4, revise the Aircraft Maintenance Plan to include the operational and functional check of the fore and aft cargo doors in accordance with Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM) tasks Note 1: Accomplishment of Requirements 4 and 5 constitutes terminating action to the repetitive inspections of Requirement 3. Note 2: Brazil ANAC AD 2007-03-01R1 Amdt 39-1234 refers. | |
Compliance: | 1. Before each aircraft departure after 23 March 2007; until accomplishment of Requirements 2.a., 2.b., and 2.c. 2. Within 10 days after 23 March 2007. 2.b. (i). Before further flight. 2.b. (ii). Within 150 flight cycles after 23 March 2007. 2.c. (i). Before further flight. 3. At intervals not to exceed 150 flight cycles. 4. Within 5,000 flight cycles after 31 July 2008, unless already accomplished. 5. Check fore and aft cargo doors at intervals not to exceed 6,000 flight hours. |

Background: | The ANAC received several reports of aircraft being dispatched and flown with a cargo door unlocked. This Directive requires certain actions to ensure the cargo doors can be closed and locked before dispatch for flight. Amendment 1 introduced terminating action to the compliance for Requirement 1. |
| Amendment 2 restored the Requirement 3 text which was inadvertently omitted during amendment. Amendment 3 is issued in response to a revision of the related ANAC AD, which clarifies applicability and mandates terminating action to the repetitive inspection requirement. |
