AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Embraer EMB-135 and EMB-145 Series Aeroplanes

AD/EMB-145/18 Gust Lock Spring Cartridge 9/2008

Applicability:

Embraer EMB-145( ) aircraft, either with an operational electromechanical gust lock system or with provisions for the installation of the electromechanical system, provided a gust-lock spring cartridge Part Number (P/N) KPD2611 is  installed in that system.

Requirement:

1.    Replace, the spring cartridge P/N KPD2611 with a new spring cartridge bearing P/N KPD4235.

The detailed instructions and procedures to accomplish this AD are described in the Embraer Service Bulletins Nos. 145-27-0102, original issue,
145LEG-27-0006, original issue, and 145LEG-27-0012, original issue, or later revisions approved by the CTA.

Note 1:  The “145LEG” series of Embraer Service Bulletins only applies to Legacy executive jets.

2.    No spring cartridge P/N KPD2611 is approved for installation at the electromechanical gust lock system of the aircraft.

Note 2:  DEPARTAMENTO DE AVIAÇÃO CIVIL AD 2003-01-03R1 refers.

Compliance:

For Requirement 1 - Within 30 days after the effective date of this AD, unless previously accomplished.

For Requirement 2 - From the effective date of this AD.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 28 August 2008.

Background:

There have been cases of unscrewing of the spring cartridges of the electromechanical elevators gust lock system, precluding them to be unlocked on the ground, with a possibility of elevator jam if the failure occurs during flight.

This AD requires the replacement of the spring cartridge with one of a new part number.
