AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

On the effective date specified below, and for the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below revokes Airworthiness Directive (AD) AD/EMB-120/33 and issues the following AD under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Embraer EMB-120 (Brasilia) Series Aeroplanes

AD/EMB-120/33 Amdt 1 Aileron and Elevator Rotary Variable Inductive Transducer Bellcrank Assemblies 13/2005

Applicability:

All EMB-120( ) models, serial numbers 120004 and 120006 through 120358 inclusive, modified in accordance with any revision of Embraer Service Bulletins (SB) 120-31-0039, 120-31-0040, 120-31-0041 or 120-31-0042.

Requirement:

If not accomplished in accordance with AD/EMB-120/33, replace rotary variable inductive transducer (RVIT) bellcranks having part number (P/N) 123-82549-007 or 123-82549-009, as applicable, with bellcranks having P/N 145-51146-001 or
145-51147-001, respectively, in accordance with Embraer Service Bulletin
120-31-0046 Revision 1 dated 27 December 2002 or later revision approved by the Brazilian Centro Técnico Aeroespacial (CTA).

Note:  DAC (Brazil) AD 2001-07-01R2 and Errata dated 25 October 2005 refer.

Compliance:

Remains unchanged as “Within the next 4000 hours time in service or at the first maintenance action that requires the disassembly of the aileron/elevator RVITs, whichever occurs first, after the effective date of the original issue of this Directive”.

This Amendment becomes effective on 22 December 2005.

Background:

The Brazilian Departamento de Aviação Civil (DAC) has received reports of aileron control range being limited due to interference between the aileron RVIT bellcrank and the head of the pin that attaches the RVIT support.  The DAC has determined that similar interference may also occur with the elevator RVIT bellcrank limiting the range of elevator control.

The original issue of this Directive required a one-time modification of both RVIT bellcrank assemblies to ensure the there is no interference which may limit either aileron or elevator travel.

This Amendment increases the applicability range but also allows compliance in accordance with futures revisions of the Embraer SB approved by the Brazilian CTA.

The original issue of this Directive became effective on17 April 2003.

AD/EMB-120/30, which required a one-time inspection of the RVIT bellcrank assemblies, is related to this Directive.
