AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Dornier 228 Series Aeroplanes

AD/DO 228/3 Windshield Wash System 11/2005

Applicability:

All Dornier 228 series aeroplanes, equipped with a windshield wash system (option 3109) and spray nozzle assemblies part number (P/N) A-926054A00C installed.

Requirement:

Unless previously accomplished, modify the windshield wash system in accordance with Fairchild Dornier GmbH Service Bulletin SB-228-235 Revision 1 dated
18 December 2001, by installing spray nozzles in protective housing and changing the electrical wiring.

Note:  LBA AD 1999-030/3 refers.

Compliance:

Within six months after the effective date of this Directive.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 27 October 2005.

Background:

The German Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) has been advised of instances where smoke in the cockpit has been caused by overheating of the windshield spray nozzle heating elements before flight.

This Directive requires the modification of the windshield wash system to prevent smoke and possible fire in the cockpit.
