Ad/DHC-8/46 Amdt 4 - Cockpit Door Alternate Release (Cth)
AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE
On the effective date specified below, and for the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below revokes Airworthiness Directive (AD) AD/DHC-8/46 Amdt 3 and issues the following AD under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Applicability: | DHC-8 aircraft Models 102, 103, 106, 201, 202, 301, 311, 314, and 315; equipped with cockpit door assembly, part numbers 82510074-( ), 82510294-( ), Note 1: -( ) denotes all dash numbers. |
Requirement: | 1. Action in accordance with Section III, Accomplishment Instructions, “Special Inspection/Repair”, of de Havilland Service Bulletin (SB) 8-52-39 Revision B, dated 4 July 1997, or a later Transport Canada approved revision. 2. Install Modification 8/2337 in accordance with SB 8-52-39 Revision B, or a later Transport Canada approved revision. Note 2: Modifications 8/2228, 8/2229, 8/2231, 8/2232, 8Q100859, 8Q900267, 8Q420101, 8Q420143, 8Q200131, or 8Q420440, installed during production are equivalent to Modification 8/2337, with respect to the cockpit door alternate release mechanism, and meet the intent of Requirement 2. Note 3: Transport Canada AD CF-1996-20R4 refers. |
Compliance: | 1. Before 31 October 1997. Inspect thereafter at intervals not to exceed 800 flight hours. 2. Before 31 October 1997. The compliance times remain unchanged by this issue of the Directive. |

Background: | Investigation by the manufacturer of an in-flight incident of failure of the cockpit door alternate release mechanism has revealed a serious design deficiency. This Directive requires incorporation of a modification to correct the design deficiency. Amendment 1 extended the compliance time. An All Operator Message from the manufacturer gave further instructions to operators regarding a redesign of the door hinges because the existing modification was not satisfactory under all conditions. |
| Amendment 2 again extended the compliance due to further difficulty with the modification, and introduced a post mod repetitive inspection, which will deal with the shortcoming of the modification until such time as terminating action is determined. Amendment 3 amended applicability due to the installation of new reinforced cockpit doors. Amendment 4 is issued in response to a revision of the related Transport Canada AD, which amends applicability to exempt new reinforced cockpit doors that are not subject to the alternate release jamming issue. |
