Requirement: | 1. For main rotor mast assemblies having logged less than 1,600 flight hours since new or complete overhaul: Inspect the mast nut using a light source or a boroscope if MOD 0762B33 or MOD 0762B69 is not embodied, or using a boroscope if MOD 0762B33 or MOD 0762B69 is embodied, in accordance with paragraph 2.B. of Eurocopter AS 365 Alert Service Bulletin No. 62.00.23. 2. | This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 11 December 2006. |
Background: | The partial failure of a main rotor mast nut was detected during a main rotor mast complete overhaul. Investigation revealed the crack origin was related to circular scoring of the nut threads. Complete failure of the mast nut could lead to the loss of the helicopter. |
