Ad/Convair/26 - Main Landing Gear Lockpins (Cth)

AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Kelowna Flightcraft (General Dynamics/Convair) Series Aeroplanes

AD/CONVAIR/26 Main Landing Gear Lockpins 11/2006

Applicability:

Models 340 and 440 aeroplanes.

Requirement:

To prevent failure of lockpins retaining the piston upper bearing and possible subsequent loss of the piston assembly from the main landing gear, accomplish the following:

1.    Inspect the piston upper bearing retaining lockpin(s).

2.    If loose or damaged lockpin(s) are discovered, replace lockpins(s).

Note:  FAA AD 71-21-04 Amdt 39-1308 refers.

Compliance:

1.    Within the next 300 hours time in service from the effective date of this AD, unless already accomplished within the last 1200 hours time in service, and at intervals not to exceed 1500 hours time in service thereafter, on those main landing gears known to have a single lockpin configuration or unknown lockpin configuration.

Within 1000 hours time in service from the effective date of this AD, unless already accomplished within the last 2000 hours time in service, and thereafter at intervals not to exceed 3000 hours time in service, inspect the piston upper bearing retaining lockpins on those main landing gears known to have more than a single lockpin configuration.

2.    Before further flight after the effective date of this AD.

The repetitive inspection intervals in Requirements 1 and 2 may be extended to 8000 hours when rework has been accomplished per Paragraph 2B, General Dynamics/Convair Service Bulletin No. 32-5, dated 3 September 1971, or later FAA approved revision.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 26 October 2006.

Background: The requirements of this AD are intended to prevent failure of the lockpins and subsequent release of the piston assembly from the main landing gear.
