AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Kelowna Flightcraft (General Dynamics/Convair) Series Aeroplanes

AD/CONVAIR/20 MLG Torque Arm Apex Bolt 5/2006

Applicability:

Model 340 and 440 aircraft, and all such model aircraft converted to turbopropeller power; incorporating a Menasco main landing gear (MLG) torque arm apex bolt (Menasco part number 528076) that has a 0.67-inch fillet relief diameter.

Requirement:

Inspect the MLG torque arm apex bolt for cracks by using a dye penetrant method.

If cracking is detected during any inspection, replace with a serviceable original bolt or a redesigned bolt.

The repetitive inspections required by this Directive may be terminated when a redesigned bolt is installed (Menasco part number 528076) that has a 0.79-inch fillet relief diameter, and a letter “R” stamped on one end.

Compliance:

Unless the initial inspection is already accomplished; within 250 hours time in service after 11 May 2006, unless accomplished within the last 300 hours time in service.  Inspect thereafter at intervals not to exceed 550 hours time in service, until a redesigned bolt is installed.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 11 May 2006.

Background:

Reports were received of MLG torque arm apex bolts cracking in the fillet relief diameter.
