AD/CASA/30 Autopilot Servo Drive Actuators (Cth)

AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Casa 212 Series Aeroplanes

AD/CASA/30 Autopilot Servo Drive Actuators 11/2008

Applicability:	C-212-CB, C-212-CC, C-212-CD and C-212-CE aircraft, all serial numbers, if Part Number (P/N) 4006719-904 or P/N 4006719-913 autopilot servo drive actuators (servo-motors) are installed.
Requirement:	1.    Identify the affected P/N 4006719-904 and P/N 4006719-913 servo-motors and modify each unit or replace it with a modified unit, in accordance with the instructions of EADS-CASA Boletin de Servicio (Service Bulletin) SB-212-22-16 dated 13 March 2006 or later Revision approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
2.    P/N 4006719-904 or P/N 4006719-913 servo-motor, as identified in Honeywell International Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) 4006719-22-A0016 (Revised 1 November 2004), may not be installed on any C-212 aircraft, unless it has been modified in accordance with the instructions of ASB 4006719-22-A0016 (Revised 1 November 2004).

Compliance:	For Requirement 1 - Within two months after the effective date of this Directive.
For Requirement 2 - After the effective date of this Directive.
This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 23 October 2008.
Background:	Honeywell International, the manufacturer of the SPZ200 autopilot system installed on the EADS-CASA C-212 series aircraft, has identified a series of servo-motors, P/N 4006719-904 and P/N 4006719-913, designed for use in the SPZ200 autopilot system, whose failure can lead to a potential unsafe flight condition.  To address and correct this situation, Honeywell International has published ASB 4006719-22-A0016 (Revised), that indentifies the affected servo-motors, recommending the removal of these units from the aircraft and including modification instructions to be accomplished prior to reinstallation.
EADS-CASA has determined that the flight safety of the C-212 aircraft is at risk.  Consequently, SB-212-22-16 has been published to advise C-212 operators of this condition and to recommend that the affected servo-motors are modified or replaced with modified units.

For the reasons described above, this Directive requires the identification of the affected servo-motors and modification or replacement with modified units.
