AD/BR700/6 Independent Overspeed Protection (Cth)
AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE
For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998. The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Applicability: | BR700-715A1-30, BR700-715B1-30 and BR700-715C1-30 engines, all serial numbers. |
Requirement: | 1. If not previously accomplished, inspect all affected engines to determine if independent overspeed protection (IOP) units with part number (P/N) 112E9321G2 and serial numbers LHBR0371through to LHBR0389 inclusive are installed in accordance with Rolls-Royce Deutschland Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) SB-BR700-73-A900371 dated 17 June 2005. |
| 2. If two affected IOP units are installed in one aircraft, replace at least one of the suspect IOP units in accordance with ASB SB-BR700-73-A900371. | |
| 3. Replace all affected IOP units in accordance with ASB SB-BR700-73-A900371. | |

Compliance: | For Requirement 1 - Within the next 10 flight cycles after the effective date of this Directive. |
| For Requirement 2 - Before further flight after the Requirement 1 inspection. | |
| For Requirement 3 - No later than 31 July 2005. | |
| This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 22 June 2005. | |
Background: | The manufacturer has been informed by the supplier of the IOP unit that incorrect capacitors have been installed in some IOP units with P/N 112E9321G2. The incorrect capacitor in the IOP unit can lead to an inadvertent IOP command and consequently an in-flight-shutdown. |
| The actions specified by this Airworthiness Directive are intended to prevent the mentioned malfunction of the IOP unit which could lead to an in-flight-shutdown. |
