AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Boeing 767 Series Aeroplanes

AD/B767/248 Fuel Quantity Indicating System Wire Bundles 1/2009

Applicability:

Model 767-200 and -300 series aeroplanes, as identified in Boeing Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) 767-28A0064, Revision 2, dated 27 October 2005.

Requirement:

Replace the wire segments of the four Fuel Quantity Indicating System (FQIS) wire bundles with new, improved wire segments, in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions of ASB 767-28A0064, Revision 2.

Actions accomplished before the effective date of this Directive in accordance with ASB 767-28A0064 original issue, dated 31 May 2001 or Revision 1, dated
21 February 2002, are considered acceptable for compliance with the corresponding actions specified in this Directive.

Later revisions of ASB 767-28A0064, Revision 2, approved by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an Alternate Method of Compliance (AMOC) to FAA AD 2008-22-06, are considered acceptable for compliance with the equivalent Requirements of this Directive.

Compliance:

Within 36 months after the effective date of this Directive.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 15 January 2009.

Background:

This Directive results from operator inspections of the FQIS wire bundles that revealed corrosion at the connections between the ground wire and shield of each of the four FQIS wire bundles.  The Directive is issued to prevent this corrosion, which could reduce system protection of the lightning shield and result in loss of the electrical grounding between the lightning shield and the airplane structure.  This condition, in combination with flammable fuel vapours, could result in fuel tank explosions and consequent loss of the aeroplane.
