AD/B767/226 Rudder and Elevator Vibration (Cth)

AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Boeing 767 Series Aeroplanes

AD/B767/226 Rudder and Elevator Vibration 8/2006

Applicability:

All Model 767-200, -300, -300F, and 400ER series aircraft.

Requirement:

Action in accordance with the technical requirements of FAA AD 2006-11-12 Amdt 39-14616.

Note:  Boeing Special Attention Service Bulletins 767-27-0197 or 767-27-0198, or later FAA approved revisions, refer.

Compliance:

As specified in the Requirement document, with a revised effective date of
3 August 2006.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 3 August 2006.

Background:

The FAA received reports of freeplay-induced vibration of the rudder and the elevator.  The potential for vibration of the control surface must be avoided because the point of transition from vibration to divergent flutter is unknown.  The actions required by this Directive are intended to prevent excessive vibration of the airframe during flight, which could result in loss of control of the aircraft.
