AD/B767/224 Driessen Galleys (Cth)

AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Boeing 767 Series Aeroplanes

AD/B767/224 Driessen Galleys 8/2006

Applicability:	Model 767-300 series aeroplanes equipped with certain Driessen Aircraft Interior Systems or Showa Aircraft Industries galleys.
Note 1:  For clarification and for the purposes of this Directive, the use of the term "galley" also includes the terms "buffet" and "closet" that are referenced in certain service information specified in this Directive.
Requirement:	1.    Inspect the galleys to determine if any of the part numbers (P/Ns) installed are identified in Boeing Special Attention Service Bulletin 767-25-0297 Revision 1 dated 11 November 2004.  Instead of inspecting the galleys to determine if the P/Ns are installed, a review of aeroplane maintenance records is acceptable if the P/Ns can be positively determined from that review.
If a galley is installed that does not have a P/N identified in Special Attention Service Bulletin 767-25-0297 Revision 1, no further action is required by this Directive.
2.    If a galley is installed that has a P/N identified in the Boeing Special Attention Service Bulletin, replace the spiral protective wrapping of the electrical cables of the galley with new spiral protective wrapping that has been shown to meet certain flammability testing requirements; in accordance with the applicable service information Special Attention Service Bulletin.
Replacement of the spiral protective wrapping of the electrical cables of any galley with new spiral protective wrapping that has been shown to meet certain flammability testing requirements, in accordance Special Attention Service Bulletin 767-25-0297 dated 15 March 2001, prior to the effective date of this Directive, is acceptable for compliance with Requirement 2.
Later revisions of the above SB(s), approved by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an Alternate Method of Compliance (AMOC) to FAA AD 2006-12-06, are considered acceptable for compliance with the equivalent Requirements of this Directive.

Compliance:	For Requirements 1 and 2 - Within 72 months after the effective date of this Directive.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 3 August 2006.

Background:

The FAA has received results from testing and reports from the manufacturer indicating unacceptable flammability properties of wire wrapping installed in certain galleys and closets.  This Directive requires inspecting to determine if certain galleys and closets are installed and, if necessary, replacing the spiral wire wrapping of the electrical cables of the galleys and closets with new spiral wire wrapping.  The Directive is issued to prevent fire propagation or smoke in the cabin area due to electrical arcing or sparking and ignition of the spiral wire wrapping.
