AD/B767/210 In-Flight Entertainment System Cooling (Cth)

AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Boeing 767 Series Aeroplanes

AD/B767/210 In-Flight Entertainment System Cooling 6/2005

Applicability:	Boeing 767 series aeroplanes listed in the following Boeing Service Bulletins:
Model	Special Attention Service Bulletin
767-300 767-400ER	767-21-0188 dated 27 May 2004 767-21-0189 dated 27 May 2004
Requirement:	1.    Replace the in-flight entertainment (IFE) cooling card, part number (P/N) 285T1198-101, located in the P50 card file in the main equipment centre, with a new, improved cooling card, P/N 285T1198-102 in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions of Boeing Special Attention Service Bulletin 767-21-0188 (for Boeing Model 767-300 series aeroplanes) or 767-21-0189 (for Boeing Model 767-400ER series aeroplanes); as applicable.
Where the service bulletins state that the replacement may be done using an "operator's equivalent procedure" the replacement must be done according to the procedures in the chapter/subject of the applicable Boeing 767 Aeroplane Maintenance Manual specified in the service bulletins.
2.    IFE cooling card, P/N 285T1198-101, may not be installed on any aeroplane as a replacement spare.

Compliance:	For Requirement 1 - Within 18 months after the effective date of this Directive.
For Requirement 2 - As of the effective date of this Directive.
This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 9 June 2005.
Background:	The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has received a report that an improperly designed component on the IFE cooling card may cause the IFE cooling system to incorrectly interpret signals from aeroplane system interfaces.

This Directive requires replacement of the cooling card and limits the installation of the card as a replacement spare.  These measures are designed to prevent failure of the IFE cooling card to configure correctly in response to input signals from aeroplane system interfaces during a forward cargo fire, which could result in the IFE cooling fan causing smoke to penetrate occupied areas of the aeroplane.
