AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

On the effective date specified below, and for the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below revokes Airworthiness Directive (AD) AD/B737/224 Amdt 1 and issues the following AD under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Boeing 737 Series Aeroplanes

AD/B737/224 Amdt 2 Horizontal Stabilisers Front and
Rear Spar Attachment
6/2005

Applicability:

All model 737-600, -700, -700C, -800, and -900 series aircraft.

Requirement:

Action in accordance with the technical requirements of FAA AD 2004-05-19 Amdt 39-13514 as corrected in the Federal Register of 13 April 2004.

Boeing Service Bulletin 737-55-1086 Rev 1, dated 16 December 2004, or later revision approved by the FAA as an alternative method of compliance (AMOC), is an alternative method of compliance to the requirements of FAA AD 2004-05-19, paragraphs (a), (b), (c), (d) and (e).  All provisions of AD 2004-05-19 that are not specifically referenced in the above statement remain fully applicable and must be complied with.

Note 1:  Boeing Service Bulletin 737-55-1086 refers.

Note 2:  Boeing Service Bulletin 737-55-1086 Rev 1 has been approved by the FAA Seattle Aircraft Certification Office as an alternative method of compliance to the requirements of FAA AD 2004-05-19, paragraphs (a), (b), (c), (d) and (e).

Compliance:

As specified in the requirement document, with an effective date of 13 May 2004.  This date remains unchanged by this amendment.

This Amendment becomes effective on 9 June 2005.

Background:

Reports were received of a significant number of aircraft with damaged bolts and pins that attach the horizontal stabiliser to the aircraft.  The bolts and pins were replaced due to wear, pits, and/or corrosion damage.  If not detected and corrected, damage to the bolts and pins could lead to failure, and consequent loss of the horizontal stabiliser.

Amendment 1, effective 25 November 2004 was issued in response to a correction issue of the requirement document, which includes the phrase “whichever occurs first” in the grace period for the initial compliance time.  The phrase was inadvertently omitted from the original AD issue.

This amendment allows the use of Revision 1 of the referenced service bulletin or a later revision approved by the FAA as an alternative method of compliance.

The original issue of this directive became effective on 13 May 2004.
