AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

On the effective date specified below, and for the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below revokes Airworthiness Directive (AD) AD/B737/181 and issues the following AD under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Boeing 737 Series Aeroplanes

AD/B737/181 Amdt 1 Flap Track Assembly and Rear Spar Attachments 4/2006

Applicability:

Model 737 -100, -200, -200C, -300, -400, and -500 series aircraft; except aircraft on which new flap tracks were installed according to Boeing Service Bulletin
737-57-1203, dated 15 November 1990, or production equivalent.

Requirement:

Action in accordance with the technical requirements of FAA AD 2002-05-07
Amdt 39-12675.

Performance of inspections defined in Boeing Service Bulletin 737-57A1271, Part 3.B WORK INSTRUCTIONS - “INSPECTION WITH TRACK-TO-WING ATTACHMENT ASSEMBLED” is an acceptable alternative means of compliance (AMOC) to the inspection methods required by paragraphs (a)(1), (a)(2) and (d) of FAA AD 2002-05-07.  All other provisions of FAA AD 2002-05-07 remain fully effective and must be complied with.

Performance of actions defined in Boeing Service Bulletin 737-57A1271, Part 3.B WORK INSTRUCTIONS - “INSPECTION WITH TRACK-TO-WING ATTACHMENT DISSASSEMBLED” is an acceptable alternative means of compliance (AMOC) to the rework required by paragraph (c) of FAA AD
2002-05-07.  All other provisions of FAA AD 2002-05-07 remain fully effective and must be complied with.

Note:  Boeing Alert Service Bulletin 737-57A1271 dated 11 September 2003 contains the accomplishment instructions and details of the AMOC provisions.

Compliance:

As specified in the Requirement document.

This Amendment becomes effective on 13 April 2006.

Background:

The FAA requires repetitive inspections of the inboard tracks of the outboard trailing edge flaps to detect discrepancies which, if not corrected, could result in loss of the outboard trailing edge flaps and consequent reduced controllability of the aircraft.

This amendment allows the use of an FAA approved alternative means of compliance (AMOC) for some inspections that are specified in the requirement section of this Airworthiness Directive.

The original issue of this Airworthiness Directive became effective on 13 June 2002.
