AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

For the reasons set out in the background section, the CASA delegate whose signature appears below issues the following Airworthiness Directive (AD) under subregulation 39.001(1) of CASR 1998.  The AD requires that the action set out in the requirement section (being action that the delegate considers necessary to correct the unsafe condition) be taken in relation to the aircraft or aeronautical product mentioned in the applicability section: (a) in the circumstances mentioned in the requirement section; and (b) in accordance with the instructions set out in the requirement section; and (c) at the time mentioned in the compliance section.

Boeing 727 Series Aeroplanes

AD/B727/202 Wing Front and Rear Spar Terminal Fittings 6/2006

Applicability:

Model 727, 727C, 727-100, 727-100C, and 727-200 series aircraft; as identified in Boeing Alert Service Bulletin 727-57A0185 Revision 1, dated 3 November 2005, or later FAA approved revision.

Requirement:

Action in accordance with the technical requirements if FAA AD 2006-07-17 Amdt 39-14544.

Compliance:

As specified in the Requirement document, with a revised effective date of
8 June 2006.

This Airworthiness Directive becomes effective on 8 June 2006.

Background:

The FAA received reports of cracking of the terminal fittings of the spars of the wings.  This Directive requires determining if the terminal fittings are made of 7079 aluminium alloy material.  If the terminal fittings are found to be 7079 aluminium alloy, repetitive inspections and other actions are required.  Undetected stress-corrosion cracking of a terminal fitting could result in failure of a terminal fitting connection and loss of structural integrity of the wing attachment.
